Flickr and the Library of Congress

I love flipping through old photos, and Shorpy got me hooked on that. By old I mean photos taken years ago like in the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s, not just my family photos from the 70’s.

Well it looks like Flickr has teamed up with the Library of Congress to enlist everyone’s help to describe and tag all the wonderful pictures that the Library of Congress has in it’s collection. Personally, I think this is a perfect example of good use of the internet. So visit the link below and take a trip back in time. (Don’t forget to visit Shorpy too)

Flickr: The Commons

Back in June of 2007, we began our first collaboration with a civic institution to facilitate giving people a voice in describing the content of a publicly-held photography collection.The key goals of this pilot project are to firstly give you a taste of the hidden treasures in the huge Library of Congress collection, and secondly to how your input of a tag or two can make the collection even richer.
